What was holding things up during those periods of time?

but i don't think there's anything there.

there is no "secret list" of men that epstein flew to an island to have intercourse with underage girls. we have no evidence of that - even for epstein himself - and we have numerous victims who've come forward (all of whom have told stories that are more like deshaun watston, and only involving epstein).

what i do think we have are a bunch of emails/texts/etc that make a bunch of really powerful men look like really pervy and bad. like my former president larry summers, who has now resigned from much of public life because of it.

no one is claiming summers did anything illegal - much less have intercourse with underage women who were trafficked to him - but he said a bunch of pervy stuff in his emails and is being taken down because of it. and, honestly, i would venture that the number of guys with more than 5 friends who don't have something in their text messages/emails/etc. that would result in lots of collective pearl clutching - especially if they're friends with a guy like epstein - has to be pretty small.

i'll bet a not insubstantial sum that's what is motivating trump. i don't think the guy did anything illegal - certainly not engage in trafficking with minors - but he barely has a filter in his public life and has always had a reputation of being a playboy. i have to imagine he has texts/emails/etc to epstein that would make hugh hefner blush.

Trump has known about any crude emails from day one. And likely didn't care a whit. Certainly doesn't care much now that he is back in office. I strongly suspect that a powerful player(s) behind the scenes convinced both the Biden Administration and the Trump Administration to bury most of this stuff (any truly damaging items were sanitized and destroyed long ago). And when it comes to who Trump might respect enough to reverse himself, Israel seems like the most probable suspect.

but knows that it will, at the least, be a huge pita and will more likely have some kind of negative effect. he already caught grief for a birthday card.

which doesn't mean that i necessarily disagree with your premise - i think trump is more likely trying to protect powerful people than to protect himself. there are lots of powerful people who will be made to look like pervy a-holes if the files get leaked - i'm sure summers was not the only one corresponding with epstein like this and there are probably people who are significantly worse, probably even involving various illegal acts (drugs, prostitution, etc.). heck, it might just be some powerful guys talking about banging the 22 year old secretary on their private jet and knowing that if their wife finds out - much less finds out because she is nationally embarrassed by having it published in the new york times - their marriage is over.

i just don't think that rises to the level of a conspiracy - that's consistent with my earlier thoughts. the epstein "files" are the equivalent of the college buddy groupchat. releasing them (probably) serves no national interest (other than our desire to point fingers at powerful people) and has the potential to f*** up lots of lives. i think that's why both republican and democratic administrations haven't made the "files" public.
