it includes all the espn channels, fox, fsn 1,2, btn, and a few non sports fox channels. It’s 40 a month but you have to use both apps and there have been a lot of complaints about it I think related to the stream freezing or kicking out of the app.

But it’s new so maybe it will improve and become a viable option.

The problem is the turner networks. I swear there used to be a MM package years ago but not anymore right? That would solve a lot.

each going to develop their own "platforms" and Disney and Fox in particular are utter dogshit at delivering live content. I suspect it is a lot harder than they expected. It's almost sad to watch the qualitative differences between the tech giants and the legacy media companies dropping interfaces that are barely an upgrade from BearShare 25 years ago.

is coterminous with the ESPN contract. My guess is ESPN fucked up the contract and is committed to offering the games through linear TV and now they're getting pinched because a significant chunk of people just get YouTube TV from September through January. I'd bet dollars to donuts some chucklefuck at ESPN built out an elaborate model where he thought X million people were going to spend $10 per month x 12 months and then reality bit them in the ass and the model is actually X million people spending $10 per month for 4 months of the year.

The SEC had a decades long relationship with CBS that was instrumental in the SEC's growth because they put their top game of the week on OTA and got less money from CBS as a result, but it was what drove a bunch of their national popularity because every week at 3:30 Eastern Time you got to see some absolutely stellar games like the Iron Bowl, World's Largest Tailgate, Third Saturday in October and other general big time games like UGA-Bama or Tennessee-Florida back when both were good. The SEC understands the importance of those huge games and access for viewers and I would not be the least bit surprised if ESPN committed to OTA a bunch of huge games on ABC and is now realizing they overpaid.

The fact that they haven't put some of the better games behind a paywall like Peacock is a head scratcher.

Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post, and told the paper he wants more emphasis on free market principles. From today's excellent editorial:

Elizabeth Warren is ready for some football. When “Monday Night Football” didn’t appear this week on YouTube TV, the Democratic senator from Massachusetts offered this explanation on social media: “When companies get too big, they have the power to cut off your favorite channels. That’s what’s happening here.”

That is not, in fact, what’s happening here.

Pay TV companies negotiate contracts to carry channels. Disney wants YouTube TV to pay it more to carry its channels, which include ABC and ESPN. YouTube TV says Disney is asking too much....

YouTube TV did not “cut off” the channels because its parent company, Google, is powerful. It would prefer not to have done so. It’s offering subscribers a $20 credit if the blackout drags deeper into the month. Two companies are debating the terms of a contract, and temporary blackouts due to carriage disputes have happened many times before.

This is not an area that would be improved by the involvement of the government. Yet Warren complained on social media that President Donald Trump has “let them get away with it.”

Get away with what? YouTube TV is trying to keep costs down for its customers, while Disney is trying to get the most value for its products. Buyers want prices to be lower, and sellers want prices to be higher. Such is life.

In this case, Warren is effectively taking Disney’s side of the argument. It was Disney that villainized Google’s “$3 trillion market cap” and said it was “using its market dominance to eliminate competition.” Never mind that the market for pay TV has never been more competitive, or that Disney owns Hulu, which is one of YouTube TV’s competitors....

Every minor consumer inconvenience is not a problem for government to solve. Google and Disney can figure this out on their own, as can consumers who decide which TV bundles to purchase....

they think people will play for the standalone espn streaming. absurd. i think this is a ballys situation but with deeper pockets. they’ve overspent on content and now have to charge so much for it that no one will buy. their only hope is to stick it to youtubetv like they used to be able to do to directv and comcast/etc
