The Ned Kelly's site has been a popular dining destination in Urbana for 30 years. The Sea Merchant, a seafood restaurant, opened there in 1976, and was acquired by John Schmitt and Ernie Horvath in 1987. Schmitt and Horvath converted the restaurant to Ned Kelly's in 1993, and Schmitt remains the operating partner today.

Ned Kelly's drew its name from a figure in Australian folklore who lived in the late 1800s.

Gurujal said the restaurant enjoyed an increase in sales after it banned smoking two years ago.

I was at Mabel's so much and was so ensconced they'd let me man the door/check ID

I knew everyone very well after 4 years and STILL keep in touch with those "townies", they are all 57-77 years old now, well the ones that are alive. Some are not, some died quite young from many different things.

There are videos on youtube of the bands from way back 1986-1990 and you can see my head dancing up front a lot. I have put those up here about 6 years ago when some of us were reminiscing.

I need to put some old Mabel's pics up here for fun. I will try to get some together and do that this weekend. That will be fun

This was the premier local rock band, A Clockwork Orange, I am sure you'll recognize the name. Such good performers and obviously this crappy tape does not do them justice. I remember everyone saying how this song was so "Zepplin-y". And what a video, with the late Tawny Kitaen.

I still keep in touch with the guitarist, man he is 63 now, but was still playing acoustic sets in bars not too long ago.

Funny, my sister's kid is at Arkansas and she texted me from the football game and said they played In the Still of the Night and a Poison song back-to -back and that she was in hog heaven. Love that those songs endured. Think she is your age roughly, a few years younger than me.

I feel like canopy club was the only live music venue when I was on campus 1998-2002.

I think canopy club (old thunderbird theater?) was a brew and view in the mid 90s? Remember (probably in the the DI) advertisement for Animal House being shown there.

I would visit frequently as a freshman with a couple of fraternity brothers when we needed a break from the frat scene. And then as a senior, I would once again spend a lot of time there for the same reason.

make it so 18-20 year olds could only buy 3.5% beer or similar ABV wine coolers, hard lemonades, ciders, seltzers, etc. I would also make it so the BAC limit for drunk driving if you're under 21 is half of what it is when you're 21, which is fine because Uber now exists.
