When you are frustrated with officiating and decide it is time to fucking leave. My wife is pissed i walked away and say I was.fucking leaving.

Granted I could have sat in the stands and voiced my frustrations, but I walked away instead. Can't win and now I may end the marriage. I cannot win. I did not make any outbursts, was just frustrated with one sided calls so I walk away. Oh well....

The book, but the points- men crave respect and women crave love (sacrifice)- can be very enlightening, especially when men realize they tend to get angry and withdraw when disrespected (why the fuck can’t I complain!) which feels very unloving, and women tend to criticize when men don’t give up their right to… cus around the kids, chase other women, etc.- (you dummy why can’t you control your potty mouth!) which feels very disrespectful and damn if it doesn’t cycle into craziness.

I also like the part where the author says sex is a gift from God and men wanting it all the time with their wives aren’t perverts, rather normal and respect-worthy.

Anyway, take it or leave it and good luck.

i will say, as someone who was an umpire in my teens, my "colleagues" and i often were accused of bias by parents or coaches (as an example, when we were running pitching machine league, one coach was convinced we were cranking the machine's velocity against his team). in reality, i can assure you we could not have been more dispassionate about the outcome. that's not to say mistakes weren't made-- it's a much tougher job than people realize-- but the stakes of youth sports are a lot lower than people seem to realize in the moment. have fun with it, and to the extent a bad call occurs, just look at it as an opportunity to overcome adversity.

We had K-8 elementary and had sports teams that played other elementary schools for students in sixth through 8th grades. Each school fielded teams in football (two handed touch), basketball (lightweight and heavyweight) and softball. I participated in all 3 and enjoyed the heck out of it.

After 8th grade my parents moved to the North side of Peoria into the Richwoods district. When I went out for freshman football the other freshman had already been playing several years of JFL, which I had never even heard of. The coaching, development and experience with playing real football was quite different than my experience.

The guys that were going to go out for football would gather on the practice field and have our own scrimmages before official practices began. I was a new kid that had come from the Peoria High district where a couple of the Kirley brothers had stellar football and basketball careers at Peoria Central. I have a surname the lends itself well to the nickname Curly and that's what everyone was calling me.

The freshman coaches took in some of our scrimmages and heard me being called Curley and heard that I came from the Central district and were ready to pencil me in the starting lineup at left tackle until I told them I wasn't another one of the Kirley brothers. It was quite amusing to see their reaction.

BTW, were were 37-3 over 4 years with 2 of the losses coming sophomore year when our best players suited up for varsity and were ineligible to play in the sophomore game.

The other loss was junior year on the road at Pekin. We lead 21-0 nothing at halftime and they came back and started running a wingback trap play for 8-10 yard chunks that we couldn't stop. They scored to make it 21-20 with 30 seconds left. They lined up for the extra point and the holder bobbled the ball, picked up and ran around left end for the 2 point conversion.

They threw bricks at our bus on the way out.

have to go to Savannah, Charlotte and Atlanta regularly for tournaments. I get that, they're just light years ahead of everyone else in Greenville. My buddy had a daughter who went to Michigan on a soccer scholarship, she had to go to the west suburbs of Chicago every day for practice and had to fly to California, Texas or Florida 3 weekends a month during the season.

People do not understand the level of outlier in athletes like this. Unless your kid is playing up a level and is a star even among the older kids there is absolutely no reason for you to do travel.

Our rec league is probably 75% black or Hispanic and a kid who did club crap who is on our team (and sucks) said that the 4 or 5 best players in our rec league are way better than anyone he saw in club. But he did say the worst people in rec were waaaaaaaay below the worst people in club. I think the only way things get better is if the rec leagues get popular enough that they can stratify the players and have two separate leagues at each level but I just don't think that is going to happen.

The issue with club isn't that it exists, it is that all of the clubs try to be more than they should.

85% of club players belong there skill wise. 15% of the club players are there because their parents are willing to pay the money so they can tell other parents their kids play club soccer. The club is happy to take their money to keep costs lower for the good players who play 90% of the game.

Club soccer has its warts, but the coaching and skill development is generally decent and the players who are there want to be there. They practice significantly more than rec, focus while they are there, play better competition, and therefore develop as players much faster than kids who only do rec. None of this is an issue.

The issue with club soccer is traveling outside of a 1.5 hour radius to play other teams....unless you live in some weird outlier town out west, there are a dozen teams that are as good as your club within 90 minutes of you. If for some reason you really have a special team that is just murdering everyone else, then you need to move up 1 year competition wise. It is complete nonsense that teams must travel crazy distances to play good teams. Our club plays in a league that is contained within 90 minutes of travel and we annually play 2 tournaments locally and 2 tournamnets that are each about 3.5-4 hours away....it's reasonable.

The other club in town plays EA league games that are across Seattle, Portland, SLC, Las Vegas, and everywhere inbetween. They claim they have to for "competition". My sons 2014 birth year team beat their 2013 birth year EA team twice last spring so they have competition right here in town from a younger group of boys. Despite that, they spend thousands of dollars to travel around the PNW to get their ass beat every weekend. That is the issue with club soccer. There is no need to fleece parents of money and to have that type of travel schedule. It's just dumb and unnecessary. It's a money grab for the directors of the clubs so they can have a do little to nothing job of "managing" the clubs.

Creating a single unified league with promotion and relegation with clubs allowed to have multiple teams would solve a lot of this and keep travel minimal

Parents are the driver though for much of the travel nonsense as they leave clubs that don’t belong to certain leagues

based on skill and/or geography. It employs promotion and relegation and allows for clubs with multiple teams at each age. It works out great.

My older son's team is most likely going to finish in 2nd place in their league and they'll be promoted up if they do. We already play in the highest division of the Eastern Washington league so we'll have the option of A) promoting to WPL Classic League which would require a league with a range of 3.5 hours driving time or B) we can just promote up by playing a year up, which is what we'll do.

Thankfully our coach and parents don't get sucked into the nonsense of unnecessary travel. Our old coach was an absolute ego maniac and always tried to play as far away as possible. Thank God he is gone.

Even the third team has a small conference with three of the teams three hours away.

Meanwhile there are five ECNL teams in our city we never get to play and tons of other good clubs that are aced out of either by the top clubs.

And there are so many parents willing to drive an hour to join our club so their kid gets to play in MLS NeXT… so they not only travel to games they get to spend four times a week commuting for practice

We've lost sight of the fact that these are kids. Who don't need to be "experts" in a single sport or activitity at these ages. They should be trying and enjoying a ton of different activities at these ages.

My, God that's terrible. 20 years from now, that kid isn't going to care about his junior high soccer team. He probably will care about the time he missed with his grandparents and cousins.

Obviously it is club dependent, but many are just fine. Our club practices 3x a week the month

prior to Fall and Spring league play and then 2x a week during league play with usually 1 game each weekend. In winter it is 1x a week playing futsol (optional) and in summer off season it is 2x a week (optional).

There are also dead periods built in and also kids are encouraged to play a 2nd sport and it is perfectly ok to miss a practice or game for other obligations. That obviously can translate into playing time if other kids are out progressing the ones who are missing practices for other sports, but I think that's a good life lesson on how choices need to be evaluated.

On the 1.5 hour distance, I think you misunderstood my point. I'm not saying teams don't play outside a 90 minute radius, I'm saying they have no need to. There are very few youth soccer clubs in America (especially east of the Mississippi) that don't have access to a dozen other clubs of similar skill level within 90 minutes. If they are playing further out than that, that is a dumb choice and an unnecessary one made by overzealous and self important club directors.

I have seen a lot of travel teams over the years exceeed that limit. My friend's son's team frequently does. A lof of games in far western KY which can be a 3-4 hour drive (one way). The excuse is, "But it is still in state!".

. . . I spent at baseball, basketball and soccer practice in junior high. Baseball might have been twice a week for 2 to 3 hours at a time because it was the summer. But I bet the other two were only once a week for 2 or 3 hours because they were during the school year.

I'm not certain what the "correct" number is here. But the overall time committment for kids this age should arguably be less than 10 hours per week.

the kids are averaging no more than 6 hours a week on average. I have no issues with that. My 12 year old is in a very rigorous school that gives out 1-2 hours of homework daily and he is able to juggle that, club soccer, and aau basketball just fine. October and March are both a bit busy because soccer and basketball overlap those two months in starting up/shutting down, but nothing too crazy.

Most club schedules aren't as crazy as parents make them out to be....but the ones that are truly 10-15 hours each week are unnecessary unless you are truly elite and at some sort of academy (IMG or similar).

The parents are by far an away the bigger issue. The officiating is an issue because 1) there is a lack of sports officials 2) the few qualified guys who did it because they love the game and still want to be involved in some capacity have gone away because of the overzealous & vicarious parents....that leaves teenage / high school aged kids to do the officiating. They aren't experienced enough and often times they are unfairly working solo. 1 person cannot effectively umpire a baseball game/ref a soccer match/ref a basketball game/ etc. No unattached adult is going to jump through the hoops to get certified just to make $25 to ref a soccer game for an 1:15 minutes....it just doesn't make economic sense.

Add in the fact that most of youth sports today are travel / club / AAU / etc. and everyone thinks they are something special and that little Johnny is the next big thing, it's just a recipe for disaster.

I'm just as guilty as the next parent in being critical about the shitty officiating. My solution is to not sit near the Villainess. If I'm by her, I'm comfortable enough vocally expressing my displeasure with the fact that the 14 year old line judge doesn't understand what an offsides is and how they just blew a call that resulted in a goal against us. Instead, I go and post up next to a parent who is an acquaintance (not a friend, can't be too comfortable with them) and chat with them during the game. It helps me naturally keep my reactions to bad calls in my head or at the least very muted to a quiet level.

it really doesn't matter who wins or loses. I told my kid that before and after each game. I told him that no one gives a shit what team won the 2018 Sherman Oaks AA championship. The key is to play your best especially when you're facing their best.

Even in travel ball. I loved losing the first game of the knock out day. Like i want to sit from 8 am until 7 pm on a sunday in the hot sun. only to have to drive 2 hours home? No thank you. No one cares if you won the silver bracket of the Camarillo Diamond Classic.

in 2nd place of the bronze division of the U9 3 Blind Refs Tournament in Kalispel Montana is laughably TOO DAMN HIGH.

I tell people all the time that all that anyone should care about at this age is development. As you said, no one is going to remember who won what in a year or more. I want my kids to win, because that is human nature, but being honest about things, finishing .500 is the absolute best case for kids. Lose all of your games - not as much fun for the kids and some may lose or not develop a love for the game. Win all of your games - you aren't being pushed enough and your development is going to stall.

Priorities 1, 2, & 3 should be development because before High School Varsity or High School AAU nothing matters in the slightest. There are no scouts at your U13 whatever game.....The problem is that all of these club teams need to justify the thousands of dollars annually they are charging you to play on their travel team. It's a broken system.

I really wish the rec leagues were more competitive.

I saw a funny comment online last year about the humor in 2 travel teams from towns next to each other playing each other in a travel tournament 2 hours away. Hotel and food and gas costs added to the normal expense for fields, refs, etc.

If the park districts were competitive, you probably wouldn't see B, C, D teams in travel because those kids could play, grow, enjoy in the house league. That's the way it used to be growing up. Now, everything beyond an A (maybe a B) is just a cash grab.

If the club is focused on skill development, having a B and below squad is great. Not all kids are superstars or develop at the same rate. Many of the kids on the B team at U10 will be the stars on the varsity team...kids just develop at different rates and no one really know how good a kid will be until after they go through puberty.

I just saw a study a couple of days ago that determined that there is basically no predictive correlation between success in youth sports to success in high school age sports. Many of the great kids at U9 will be bench players in high school and many of the kids that are slow and uncoordinated at U9 will be stars in high school. Offering B and below teams is great if those clubs just focus on developing those kids at the right pace. The farce is when those clubs send those kids to tournaments 8 hours away to play other developmental level teams from far away.

ride, 1 played Ivy League club, 1 played D1 club (in a sport he didn’t even play in HS).

You get what you pay for, if you want the best instruction and competition and visibility a top club- A or B teams- is good, if you just want to be good in HS then C or local club can be fine.

A key thing: talent. My kid started on the B team but growing to 6 feet vs. others maxing at 5’7” (hey, kinda tall!) meant she had a shot at D1 and they didn’t (just as Penn St. and Illinois stopped recruiting her when she didn’t grow past 6’).

I think someone should make that testing that tells you how tall your kid is going to be easily accessible and cost $75.

who may not have been physically mature or may not have wanted to be as committed, were better suited for House/Park District leagues instead of paying $3000/year for club.

I've definitely seen B and some C kids blossom over time. But back in the day, we had robust, competitive House leagues and parents didn't have to pay $3000/yr for developmental sports. Now, many places don't have those House league options past the primary grades so it's either travel club or nothing.

Rec leagues are only one season. And sometimes it's worth it for a parent to pay the money for your child to continue playing a sport they love all year round, if that is what they want to do. In that case it's money well spent.

Also, I have seen B team kids blossom later in life. Two kids, in particular, played rec with my boy. They weren't very good. But they loved playing and didn't want to quit. So they stayed with it and are now on their high school teams. And they get playing time. This wouldn't have happened with out the year round training.

We only get so much time to play highly organized sports in our lives so if a kid wants to continue they should. I always say, never quit the sport you love, make the sport quit you.

For example I loved playing football. I would have liked to play college. But I was 1,000,000 miles from that. So I didn't quit football, I just couldn't play anymore.

Used to be that Rec leagues had multiple seasons.

in our area. The one we attend is big, but not crazy, but overall the 4 locations average 10k attendance total each week. The main campus has a huge modern sports center with turf fields, indoor bball courts, etc so they host tons of youth sports.

It is the same thing with their leagues. They did a summer basketball league and 700 spots were gone in under 10 minutes. They probably could have filled 4x that if they wanted to.

buddy couldn't find a second person. It was like 5th/6th grade kids playing, probably 1997, maybe 1998. Potential double play ball coming in, third baseman throws it to second baseman, kid clearly isn't anywhere near the bag and throws it to first and they got the guy at first. You could still see the mark 2 feet from the bag where the second baseman slid his foot. I call the kid safe at second and you'd have thought I just farted in church.

The team in the field was all celebrating their huge double play and here I was, "nope, dude missed the bag." Coach runs out, gets in my face, buddy at home runs out, "fielder missed the bag, safe at second." Coach explodes, parents are going ape shit, absolutely ape shit. Coach calls me a cock sucker and I take off the ump shirt they gave me and told the guy to go fuck himself. My buddy begged me to stay and I was like "nope, not a fucking chance, keep the money."

He ends up forfeiting the team whose coach called me a cocksucker and I could hear one solitary male yell "bull shit" as I was in the parking lot. I still got paid for the game and the league asked if they could give the coach my contact information because he "wanted to send an apology." I declined.

People act like this shit is some new phenomenon but I think it's been going on a lot longer than anyone wants to admit, it's just that now all these tantrums get caught on video.

I don't say a single word at the games. I clap. That's it. My son said he doesn't want me yelling because it's a distraction and I ain't ever gonna yell at the refs. Soccer and little league down here use retired guys who do all the officiating. They specifically don't let young people do it because they want a grown ass man who will tell the offending parents or coaches to STFU.

The machine isn't perfect, but you can pretty much zero it in such that it throws strikes about 90%+ of the time. There is a kid up who just will not swing at anything....he's terrified of even being in the batter's box and is probably only playing because his parents are forcing him to. I would usually give the kids a called "ball" no matter what after 2 strikes, but would also tell them they had to swing at the next one.

The kid takes strike 3 looking (probably for the 3rd time that game) and the dad loses his mind at me for calling his kid out on strikes. I'm like "bro, it's a pitching machine and it's set up to throw strikes"....he demands I'm blind, it was a ball and proceeds to use lots of profanity. I tell the dad he's ejected and needs to watch from the parking lot. Dad refuses to leave and continues to lose his mind....other idiot parents from the same team continue to join in. I walk over to the coach and tell him he has 2 minutes to get his parents under control and for the dad to leave the field. Two minutes later nothing is fixed so I pull the plug on the machine, call the game, and walk to the snack stand to call my uncle who was the little league commissioner and tell him the story. The coach or assistant coach then goes nuclear after I say they've forfeited the game and HE TRIES TO FIGHT ME.....a grown man had to be held back by the opposing coaches from trying to fight an 8th grader.

Long story short, the coach and parent were banned from the league thereafter....so yes, this has been going on for a long time. Failed athlete dads have a hard time accepting their boy is also going to be a failed athlete as well.
