in regards to the costs (Healthcare, jobs, crime, etc) of illegal immigrants to this country. I am generally in agreement that people that are here and following the law (outside of just being here illegally) should be low priority.

But that like saying the law should only be enforced if the law broken is egregious. People going 10 MPH over the speed limit, should not get a ticket. It has to be 30+. Mortgage fraud should only be prosecuted if the amount of fraud is greater than $1 million, etc.

If we are a country of laws, you get punished if you are caught. Period. If you don't like it, change the law.

Reagan granted amnesty to illegal immigrants once with the promise that Democrats agreed to secure our borders. How has that worked out?

Odds of them having health insurance are minimal. Which means every trip to the doctor is tax payer funded. Frequently, they take up ER times and visits. Crime stats are complete guesses because no one knows how many are actually here, and what crimes they commit. Sure they pay sales tax, and some even pay into SS, but we have only the most generically broad views of what illegal immigration actually costs the taxpaying public.

That has been a huge problem here in Lexington which has a very large illegal population thanks to all the nearby horse farms. You get into an auto accident in the Little Mexico section of Lexington and a few things are almost certain:

1. The other driver is an illegal;

Progressive groups and lawmakers in Iowa lamented Roberts’s arrest, with Democratic state Rep. Larry McBurney of Des Moines calling it “an outright disgrace” and accusing ICE of treating "our schools … as political battlegrounds for federal overreach."

“The idea of ICE raiding our schools and removing a highly respected leader from our community is a stain on Iowa and on America,” McBurney wrote on Facebook. “It undermines trust, threatens stability, and sends a chilling message to educators and families across the state.”

McBurney later deleted the post.

The Directors Council, an umbrella group of several nonprofits that serve Des Moines's Black community, said in a statement that “ Dr. Roberts has been a trusted partner, a dedicated advocate for equity, and an unwavering supporter of families and youth in Polk County,” adding that his contributions to “the wider community are immeasurable, and we stand with him during this uncertain moment."

According to the Des Moines Register, Roberts made “$305,917 in salary and benefits in the 2024-25 school year.”

Earlier, on Feb. 5, 2020, Roberts was arrested and charged with illegally possessing a weapon. According to ICE, “it is a violation of federal law for those in the U.S. without legal status to possess a firearm and ammunition.”

Iowa Democrats are rallying behind a school superintendent who was arrested by ICE on allegations that he is in the country illegally this week, and they are led by a school board chair who once held a key role in the Obama White House.

After ICE arrested Ian Roberts, the superintendent for Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) last week, school board chair Jackie Norris called for people to have "radical empathy" as Roberts' case plays out. Norris previously served as White House chief of staff for then-first lady Michelle Obama. Meanwhile, Republicans in the state legislature are also launching a probe into how the board chose Roberts in the first place.

Norris supported Roberts in a statement on Friday in which she said that officials "do not have all the facts."

"There is much we do not know," Norris said. "However, what we do know is that Dr. Roberts has been an integral part of our school community since he joined over two years ago."
