We’ve found the stronger operators and they’ve been great to work with.

Contrary to Vince Lombardi, learning to lose with grace is a valuable lesson for all human beings, and sports helps us with that. True, some kids learn sooner than others, but eventually the values of fairness, honesty, humility, hard work, gratefulness, and acceptance work their way through in ways you don’t find in family, life, school… maybe work. Competition brings out the worst in people, but also the best.

My kids competed, won some, lost some- that’s life.

But if not, you don’t know the half of how horrible it really is.

Coaches are like politicians. If they want to do it, it means they absolutely 100% are not the right person to be doing the job.

50% of parents cannot deal with little johnny not making the “A” team or not being the center of the offense. Everyone thinks their kids is better than most all of the other kids.

98% of parents don’t understand that it doesn’t matter if you are a star at 9 years old and that likely isn’t going to continue past puberty…..and they also don’t understand that some of the “B” team kids are going to be absolute studs after puberty.

The amount of shit talking parents and coaches do about kids in sports is reason enough to cancel all club sports.

Our old soccer club was so toxic that the villainess and I (along with a few other parents assisting) left 2 years ago and started our own club. In the last 24 months we’ve grown to 150 players and 11 teams. After year 1 I was so burned out with awful coaches and parents that I stepped down from the club I founded…..and a year after that we are now considering leaving our own club because of the continued toxic nonsense. People literally left the old club because of the toxic culture, yet those same people have devolved our brand new club into the same mess in just 2 years.

Adults in youth sports are the worst.

Like at the older elementary age-5th,6th grade.

The rule was that the kids were all given grades A, B, or C depending on their skill/ability level. And when a coach drafted his team he had to choose equal numbers of A’s B’s and C’s

So the coaches cleverly under graded certain players the previous season and knew who those kids were when they drafted the next season.

So they could stack their teams.

So incredibly stupid and petty

i sent my kid in shorts and regular gym shoes. told him not to throw hard or run fast. I told him the lower you get picked the better the team will be.

I told him, if they don't know who you are by now, then it's their problem.

I get a fight or flight adrenaline pit in my stomach the morning of every game because I hate the parents and atmosphere so much.

I’m actively trying to find something else. My daughter is in parks and rec basketball and that’s much much better…but parks and rec football is tough to get a spot as they’re very limited.

and rec is left with parent volunteer coaches who probably never even played the sport and the kids are often very beginner level. There is a sliding scale of bad based on the motor skill needs of the sport (basketball being the worst and a complete foul & double dribble fest at the rec level).

We really end up with the worst case scenario with the current state of rec and club kids sports. Youth sports should be focused solely on skill development and love of the game. Instead we get little skill development in rec leagues and just pure money extraction in club leagues.

complaining after one of their games because the league had 30 minutes of practice, then the games, and like the fourth week they played some team that beat them 42-28 and they only ran 6 plays on offense. Turned out their entire playbook was gadget plays and they scored every play in that game. Dude was absolutely livid.

The Villainess and I have collectively spent over 1,000 hours volunteering to make this

club happen over the last 2 years. I know first hand how horribly awful this epidemic is.

Kids would be 100% better off if we turned back the clock 50 years to when club sports didn't exist and everyone just played rec YMCA sports until middle school/high school.

Everything about youth club sports has a downside to it: Cost, overzealous parents who are reliving their glory days, overzealous parents who didn't make the team when they were kids, 1 sport specialization (this is the worst imo), horrible no nothing assholes posing as knowledgeable coaches, pay for play, garbage money grab stay and play tournaments, and on and on.

Go join your kid's baseball league board of directors and get back to me in 6 months if you don't believe me. It's a cesspool.

can ball, he's good, he's been on good teams, etc. That is the outlier experience and survivor bias you bring. Most kids aren't that good, most parents don't want that level of commitment or have multiple kids and can't juggle that sort of scheduling and they want their kid to get reps, but not when you have some roided out guy who played backup catcher at Cal State Fullerton yelling at them when they get caught looking and register the second out in a critical late inning.

The market failure Villain is complaining about is the bimodal distribution of the leagues. It's either a grabass league for an hour a week or three weeknights of practice and 9 hours at the field on Saturday or something equally absurd. People want more than the grabass league, but less than the money making grift of the "elite" crap and that option simply does not exist for most of the country (SoCal certainly has the population to support it). I don't know the story, but I would guess that Villain was trying to make that middle ground league but it probably quickly got hijacked by a bunch of douchebags who think their daughters are going to play soccer at UCLA or some similar nonsense.

The most egregious part was the ref ignoring the asshole Coach that hit the player

And focusing on the other coach who came in to protect his player(and then was pushed by the asshole coach).

The offending coach and ref should both have a lifetime ban.

Can’t control his temper and can’t instill proper love and respect for the game.

Which would involve having the biggest player on your team get in the fouling player’s face (1” between noses is how I would describe it) on the ensuing kick and then give her a little elbow. If it escalates, you let it escalate. But the fisticuffs need to be between players and the ref needs to pull out their cards.
