Is there a term for the fictional plot device (book, television or film) where the characters make some inital poor decisions which threaten bad consequences. Only to subsequently make increasingly poorer decisions in a desperate effort save themselves, resulting in the initial bad situation getting exponentially worse until they are complete trapped?

Whatever it is called, I hate it.
