Following another weekend of gun violence around Chicago, city and faith leaders gathered outside City Hall on Monday morning to propose the creation of a new city department focused on fighting gun violence.
They say the proposed Department of Gun Violence Reduction will better focus on the crisis of gun violence in Chicago and work more efficiently across city agencies, adding that mayoral turnover and past politics have gotten in the way of a consistent and concentrated approach.
At least 12 people were shot late Friday night on the Far South Side, near West 95th Street and South Wentworth Avenue in Roseland. Chicago police say two people inside a red SUV opened fire on a large crowd that had reportedly gathered to celebrate Juneteenth.
Of the 12 people confirmed shot, police say eight were listed in fair condition, two were listed in good condition and two were listed in critical condition.
“I came outside to smoke a cigarette, heard a few shots, then ran back inside … and warned my family,” Delwyn Mellon, who lives nearby, said. “This makes me want to move, but how safe are you anywhere?
“Where can you go? You know, it’s all over the place.”
Since that shooting in Roseland, police say two people were killed and 17 others were injured in various shootings around the city over the weekend.
An 18-year-old man died after being shot Saturday night in Austin on the city’s West Side, while a 21-year-old man died after being shot Sunday morning in Englewood on the city’s South Side, according to police.
Supporters of the proposed Department of Gun Violence Reduction say it will provide desperately needed consistency and accountability at City Hall, no matter who the mayor is.
“We looked at this last weekend to see the violence that took place in the city,” Fr. Michael Pfleger of Saint Sabina Church said during Monday’s press conference. “It is vulnerable, and so it must be addressed in a very continuous effort, which is why we need a gun violence office that goes from administration to administration, that oversees, that coordinates, that holds people accountable.”
There are no funding details yet for the proposed Department of Gun Violence Reduction, but city and faith leaders are hoping for $100 million to fund the office, which would include a commissioner and a community advisory board. Leaders also admit they have not been in contact with the Chicago Police Department, but view CPD as a partner.
Leaders also believe they have Mayor Brandon Johnson’s support and say they expect movement on establishing the new city department this fall.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump took to social media to address the weekend violence in Chicago and go after Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a frequent critic of Trump.
“Lots of Killing going on in Chicago,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “… Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!! D.C. went from one of the worst, to one of the safest cities in the U.S. President DJT”

Just always fun to see a group of the usual mopes at City Hall leading chants, etc about a solution that NOBODY ELSE CAN FIGURE OUT BUT THEM.

LOLOLOLOL. Three and a half years in, and shite-for-brains has just now got a solution that has escaped everyone else's notice until 2026.
