I did not watch the game live. I watched the ending this morning after reading some of the post game commentary. So I knew what was coming.

I think that shot is more defensible than people are giving it credit for being. Sure, the result was terrible for the Spurs. But the Spurs' player is thinking in the moment that he is either going to lay it up easily and thereby just about guarantee a Spurs win with a 4 point lead and almost no time left on the clock or at the very least, get fouled and go to the line. Should he have perhaps gone up for a dunk to ensure either a basket and/or foul? Sure. But that is convenient hindsight.
