Lanning only spent one year as a graduate assistant for Saban in 2015, but it was a memorable one. Lanning still recalls that early during his brief stint, he stepped in to run a drill, only for Saban to berate him for teaching it incorrectly to the watching players.

It turns out those players happened to be participants in a camp for 8-year-olds.

“It didn’t matter that we were coaching 8-year-olds,” Lanning said on the Bussin’ With the Boys podcast. “It mattered that you were doing the drill right.”

These days, these coaches are no longer Saban’s minions or his rivals. Instead, they’re the people texting him for advice. And now, the notoriously tech-averse Saban actually texts the back.

“Either somebody has his phone,” Smart said, “or he learned how to text.”
