People can be cut any time; scholarship rules control whether aid can be cut

If you flunk out, have major misconduct, etc., you can lose your scholarship for the rest of the year. You can't be cut because the coach left or because you stink. At least in theory. Scholarships are yearly.
We know programs are cutting people at the end of the year to make room for transfers in. Presumably staffs tell some players to look around, because at the end of the year, you won't be renewed.
