Russian doesn't just think they can take what they want from Ukraine. The don't want NATO on their border. And part of the NATO charter is that you can't join NATO if you have disputed borders. So Putin knows this. NATO is actually an existential threat to Russia. I'll try to find this great video on how we fucked over Putin in the 90s and went back on agreements about not pushing NATO further East. I posted it before but I'll see if I can find it again.
