Trump bombed Syria in 2017, and 2018. Obama and Bush invoked it to justify attacks in Afghanistan, the Philippines, Georgia, Yemen, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, and Somalia. so lets not throw stones  Previous Message
I have read a bunch on the arguments over whether what Trump ordered against Iran was legal. Interesting pro and con. However, I can easily recall other controversial actions done by the sitting POTUS without Congressional approval.
So, if Trump's action was not legal, how about Obama's? From Wikipedia:
18 March 2011: U.S. President Barack Obama orders military air strikes against Muammar Gaddafi's forces in Libya in his address to the nation from the White House.
21 March 2011: Obama sent a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate claiming the actions were justified under the War Powers Resolution.
26 March 2011: Obama addressed the nation from the White House, providing an update on the current state of the military intervention in Libya.
What exactly is the difference? Was the opponent a threat to attack the US? No. Were we already engaged with a war with them? No. Was the country run by dangerous people? Yes. Did both presidents communicate to the country? Yes, or close enough, with different styles, of course.
Did the UN support action? This time: not yet. Then: yes. Legally that does not matter.
