rich people to each chip in small amounts, maybe a million to five million, to drive valuation and then they can claim they own a piece of a pro team. It's purely a vanity play that I would say is akin to a capital drive for a private school and it has absolutely no basis in reality relative to the value of the underlying asset using any sort of traditional valuation metric. That's a lot of money for a league that isn't making money. Perhaps that team is. I suppose it all hinges on media rights.
The owners who cashed in some shares to make room for some new investors were probably smart. They made a very nice gain and reduced their risk.
