Last week we pressed and Fondop had his best game for probably 6 months. Yesterday we didn’t and he didn’t.
Team shape and tactics are over-dependent on Fondop winning a reasonable share of challenges and others picking up knock downs.
Yesterday he hardly won anything- partly because he was being fouled (defender leveraging himself with a forearm on his shoulder) and/or double marked any time the ball came near him.
Nobody can complain that MM has been unadventurous or defensive in his team selection. Very few teams these days play 2 up front, 2 out and out wingers and only 2 in central midfield. It’s adventurous to the point of being almost reckless. No matter how good the two central midfielders are. And Appiah-Forson has been superb, even without the wonder goal.
Neither winger was really any help to his respective fullback when out of possession. Drummond in particular looked like a fish out of water. Obviously been told to be disciplined and and help Robson out but it’s just not his game.
I believe that we need to play an extra central midfielder (probably Pett) next week - or we won’t be able to control the game, unless the opposition are very poor. Can see one of Drummond or Fawunmi being dropped, if not both. And possibly Childers (or Hill) starting ahead of Kavanagh. All very well having a ‘poacher’ as second striker- but if he doesn’t contribute anything to build up play - is it worth it? We are still over-dependent on Fondop winning a reasonable share of his duels, regardless of who plays alongside or just behind him.
Ambivalent as to whether Manny comes in while Scott Morriss is suspended - at the expense of Temple. Only if we go to 3 at the back. Thought Delaney was excellent yesterday. Commanding and can see why he is keeping Monthe out of the team.
Thought Temple was unlucky. The goal was a fluke and could just as easily have happened to anyone else. And the penalty was very harsh. Not saying it wasn’t justified to be given, but 9 out of 10 of those sort of challenges aren’t. Much more arguable than the red card. You can’t go into challenges high like that, heel first, without looking and expecting to get away with it. So what if their player exaggerated the contact? Any of ours would have done the same.
