Chelsea were the visitors to Boundary Park for Athletic's first season in the newly formed Premier League and 20,699 spectators were present to witness the momentous event. Mick Harford had given the Pensioners the lead and it looked like an inaugural defeat for the Latics but Nick Henry popped in an 86th minute equaliser to give the home side a share of the points. Steve Redmond made his debut for Athletic in the match.
