Take the 18 in the match day squad for Wembley. Deduct the 2 keepers and Yoga (u21 even if we can re-sign him). Add Caprice and Charsley - only not in that squad through injury. Comes to 17.
I don’t expect anyone apart from the injured Caprice and Charsley who wasn’t in the Wembley squad to be retained - although possibly an outside chance for Lundstram.
So, with those 17, I make it that we have room in the squad for 5 (outright) additions - BEFORE we get to the stage of “who can we get who would be an upgrade on one of those 17?”
There must be some doubts over Evans and Garner - only grounds of age and injury records. I don’t believe there’s any doubt at all that Norwood extends - unless his American surgeon tells him there’s nothing to be done with his chronic injury problem and that it’s time to retire. There must also be some doubts over Hobson, Kitching, Uchegbulam and Fondop - in terms of whether they are really up to playing at a higher level.
But Mellon already said that he was only intending to tweak the squad, rather than radically overhaul it. So I wouldn’t expect drastic changes. Wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be simply the 18 at Wembley (Barnsley permitting re Yoga) + Caprice and Charsley + 5 additions.
