We have no chance of the play offs as we just cannot produce strong team performances on a regular basis.
I watched today partly in disbelief and partly with a sense of deja vu in relation to so many games here this season. Take the first goal for instance, an opposition defender takes the ball from his own area and runs almost unchallenged to the edge of our area to set up the first goal!!
As has been said on here so many times, our midfield is sadly lacking and was deficient so many times today. Hammond unless he's put on a protein diet and given a summer of body building is not built to compete in the physicality in this league, Conlon can't tackle and tried to disguise it by trying to slide tackle players but was just by-passed by them. The only player who looked reasonable for me in terms of effort was Dallas.
As far as I am aware, Fylde are predominantly part time, yet looked a level above us at times and as I sat in a trough of despair, i've come to the conclusion that the Latics players are in the main showing their age and do not have the physicality or skill levels to run at players and beat them. I include Norwood in this as he was very poor today and if he's not getting a through ball to run onto, he offers little else.
I think next season needs to be brought into focus and the type of players that need to be recruited. I'm not certain that playing inflated salaries to attract league players at the end of the careers is necessarily the right move as we must be paying a fortune for our squad yet in terms of end product we are definitely NOT getting value for money.
Whilst the players are culpable once the cross the white line, MM has recruited poorly -Conlon flatters to deceive and lacks physicality and is also too left sided, Garner whilst he scored a couple adds little in terms of hold up play and attacking threat outside the box. Additionally, other teams seem to be set up better. Whilst MM will have time, look what Phil Brown achieved in 6 weeks at Kidderminster when they came here and beat us with a well drilled team.
For me I'd have Will Sutton at right back, I know he's a centre half by preference, but he's improved in the role this season and reminds me of Gunnar Halle and could develop similarly if worked with over the close season.
If we can't move a chunk of this squad close season because they are contracted for another season or more, then we don't look as though we'll be much better off next season.
We need players with strong running and ability on the ball in the mould of Josh Stones, Fylde today appeared younger. faster and hungrier.
