The impression I gained was that social media companies had in their web platforms a set of geese laying golden eggs: their users. To increase profits even further, they introduced garbage (extremist politics, conspiracies, psychological manipulation, illicit ads etc) to their users' diet. Altering their algorithms for the sake of revenue growth was a major root cause of the problems described, ergo greed. The much-touted self-regulation hasn't staunched the damage, and thus government regulation and anti-trust measures are a necessity.
I struggle to think of any human system, commercial or otherwise, that benefits from being totally free of oversight or constraints. No doubt both P and non-P trait people create and work within these systems, and most are simply along for the ride until cascades of unintended consequences expose the weaknesses.
To compare personal computers to the steam engine; at this point humanity is still at the point where safety valves haven't been invented and pressure explosions are a regular event.
