Here in southern Germany, some university students were studied as to whether the serotonin transporter gene related to life satisfaction. It seemed to confirm other studies that the non-P trait gene had some increased life satisfaction in at least certain respects like housing and family. This was in a high socioeconomic setting, and one wonders if the results would vary in a low socioeconomic setting? The authors state that overall heritability for life satisfaction seems in the 30-50% range. So life doesn't seem fair always but maybe there are compensations?
