Attitudes seem to be slowly changing though, and in modern times NW Africa and Spain are undeniably intertwined. Partly the negative outlook was promoted by the church whose influence has waned; a process accelerated as Spain modernized post-Franco. Perhaps in the long run, more Spanish will acknowledge their shared heritage and distant ancestry. Consider also that Morocco is catching up developmentally...there's not much to distinguish say Casablanca from Valencia nowadays, for example.
The magazine photos were taken in Madrid; my impression of that city is that it is a bustling Demonstrative habitancy. The stereotype of madrileņos visiting the coastal regions in summer is that they are loud and assertive, in contrast to the placid locals.
