Hunan is some what toward the south of China. As such there is definitely per the gradient in ABO blood groups, a lower ABO A frequency than is found as one advances north. The major cause of maternal death across the world is hemorrhage. There is less hemorrhage tendancy in those with ABO group A so that is one reasons for the higher maternal death rate in the south of China. There is also more hemorrhage and deaths in the west of China as that is the more rural and underserved part of China.
The remarkable thing about the article is the difficult to believe improvement in maternal mortality in recent years although I guess it is possible that an authoritarian government can more quickly place medical facilities where they are needed and command women to attend hospitals when delivering a baby?
The NPA findings are interesting to ponder as trait A increases in frequency as one travels from south to north. And there is decreasing rates of hemorrhage and maternal mortality as one travels north and to the cities.
