Originally (1985), we thought that since the A rage and A trait were obviously related to the sympathetic nervous system, so in like manner the N rage and N trait were also likely related to the autonomic nervous system.
Some ten years ago, Ben years ago posted a few obscure 19th century references to there existing two distinct rages (“red anger” and “pale anger”), but these were by physicians, not physiologists. So, we can say that, especially, it was the 20th century physiologists (Cannon et al.) who “dropped the ball”. If they had investigated both rages -- instead of just concentrating on the sympathetic nervous system (“pale anger”) in the early 1900’s -- then the N rage and N trait would be well understood today… and the NPA model would have been discovered 100 years ago.
