I will add: do not attempt any repairs unless you know in advance what you will have to do. Even though several posters like to highlight its shortcomings, I recommend reading "Da Book" by Frank Dubiel: it shows the inner workings of all the major (and quite a few minor) fountain pens of the last 75 years!
Also: if you want a cheap fountain pen to see if you like writing with a nib, do not rule out some of the Chinese pens that can be bought on line. Some US-based vendors will test them and adjust their nibs as required to ensure that you get a good writing pen.
