Tyrone Power is the protagonist who adopted his criminal alias (Johnny Apollo) after viewing a neon sign. His father, Robert Cain, Sr. (Edward Arnold), is a wealthy stock broker sentenced to a prison term for embezzlement. In order to help secure a parole for his old man, the Power character begins associating with underworld figures.
Henry Hathaway directed the movie and the cinematographer was Arthur C. Miller.
The photography is top notch. The cast is also solid and included Lloyd Nolan, Dorothy Lamour, Lionel Atwill, Mark Lawrence, Anthony Caruso, and many others.
In my estimation, this may be a "proto-noir." It is a near miss. Almost, but not quite one hundred proof noir.
