Travis Woods leans into 1998's WILD THINGS with admirable verve and reserve, and with enough historical perspective to adequately connect the dots to the film's distant roots in classic noir. He's well-ensconced at Bright Wall/Dark Room, an online "film geek" site that covers more of the current/recent waterfront than the NC e-zine, so it's not likely that he could steal the "beat" claimed by the enervatingly energetic Danilo Castro (on board as the crossing guard for all things neo-noir)...but adding him into the mix could reverse the torpor that has set in for this niche in the publication as Castro hits the "five-year itch" that is now clearly plaguing his output.
Probably won't happen, but one can always hope, right?
(I say this despite Woods' inordinate affection for ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, which can be chalked up to a period in his life where a strange symbiosis of personal demons and improbable epiphany created a personal resonance that leapfrogged the actual quality of the film in question.)
