This studio bound production was considered revolutionary in its initial release on account of the subject matter. The film's depiction of a heroin addict seems a trifle simplistic today, but it was shocking and edgy in the Fifties.
The screenplay deviated from the Nelson Algren novel in many respects. Ben Hecht supposedly doctored the script.
I talked up the film for inclusion in a Noir City Chicago festival since the entire plot is set in Chicago. In fact, the actual Chicago neighborhood (the Polish Triangle) is within a few miles south of the Music Box Theater.
