David Ulin, former Books Editor at the Los Angeles Times, provides a fine tribute to the venerated James Sallis, who leaves behind an exemplary body of work in both fiction and non-fiction. He is best known for having written DRIVE, which became a highly-discussed film by Nicolas Winding Refn in 2011.

But Ulin does a fine job of showing how Sallis transcended the label of crime novelist, finding a locus within the underpinnings of his work in his affinity for existentialist ecrivant Albert Camus.
