Edited by Dan in the MW on 12/20/2025, 1:57 am "The Man With the Golden Arm" was considered daring for its treatment of drug addiction issues in its day, but these scenes seem simplistic now. In the movie, it appears that Frank Sinatra's character is a heroin addict. Morphine was the drug used in the novel. The Elmer Bernstein musical score is outstanding and was nominated for an Academy Award.
The Nelson Algren novel has a Chicago setting. The film also starred Kim Novak who was a Chicago native before relocating to Hollywood.
Algren reportedly disliked Otto Preminger and the movie adaptation. Ben Hecht allegedly doctored the script and added the gambling house sequences and a conclusion that differed from the book. The Chicago street scenes are strictly studio sets on the back lot, but overall I still like it.
