The movie had a definite "quota quickie" feel to it. The plot seems rushed and Terence Fisher's direction was somewhat pedestrian. In one hilarious throwaway bit of a dialogue, a character who initially had urged Paul Henreid's skilled plastic surgeon to rebuild the face of female criminal disfigured during the war suddenly cautions him to be careful not to get too closely involved with her (after Henreid is married to his patient) because the woman is an untrustworthy mental case. Gee thanks for the advice!
Lizabeth Scott was an actress out on loan when the movie was made. I think Henreid accepted his film roles for Hammer to ride out being gray listed in Hollywood. Eventually, Henreid stopped acting altogether and took up directing television episodes and a few movies.
The story is entertaining, but the producers did not maximize the potential of the plot. Like many "Hammer" noirs, it feels as if the goal was to get the movie reels into the film cans and the picture released as a second feature as quickly as possible.
