Of course the reviewer still genuflects to American noir's cultural imperialism at the outset, but otherwise this is a solid look at Kurosawa's landmark kidnapping yarn. It's 2:23, but it holds its narrative tension with a unique, shifting mash-up of dramatic techniques and an atmospheric conclusion with a sharp, startling coda.
