The acclaimed scholar, best known to noir aficionados for his book MORE THAN NIGHT, has co-written a book (with fellow Indiana University emeritus Darlene Sadier) on the dark cinema of Portuguese director Pedro Costa, whose formidable body of work continues to drift in the direction of slow-paced immersion a la his Eastern European counterpart Bela Tarr.

His 1988 debut O SANGUE (BLOOD) is probably the most accessible of all his films--those with access to Amazon Prime can watch it for $3.99. Shot in black & white, it definitely evokes a noir-adjacent world of dread and dislocation.
