In one of those curious ironies of timing that seem to crop up in our world, TATAMI (a film about Iranian patriarchal oppression made by an Israel filmmaker) will open in the USA tonight (at the IFC Film Center) in the midst of a troubling new altercation between Israel and Iran.
TATAMI is filmed in black & white, which may add to its apparent "noir vibe." It seems tighter in concept and structure than THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG, which covers similar ground (without the judo backdrop, of course). I'm cautiously optimistic that it will get an arthouse release in major markets during the summer...
