Clearly we could have 2-3 full "NC-level" festivals covering the "homme fatal." And that doesn't include the "evil men" outside America, who did not get much coverage in this first clustering of titles (Delon in PLEIN SOLEIL/PURPLE NOON is really the only one at this point in time).
So this first construct for a BAD MEN BEING EVEN WORSE series (24 films, a la the Bay Area edition of NC) will focus on US noir and try to cover the range of bad guys and showcase the actors who were really good at being bad. We'll use the NC 2026 dates as the basis for the schedule:
Friday 1/23
SHADOW OF A DOUBT/GASLIGHT
Saturday 1/24
AMONG THE LIVING/THE PRETENDER (Albert Dekker)
THE CHASE/HIGHWAY 301 (Steve Cochran)
Sunday 1/25
CROSSFIRE/CAUGHT
HOUSE OF BAMBOO/ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW (Robert Ryan x 4)
Monday 1/26
BORN TO KILL/THE DEVIL THUMBS A RIDE (Lawrence Tierney)
Tuesday 1/27
THE PROWLER/SHIELD FOR MURDER (bad cops)
Wednesday 1/28
PITFALL/UNMASKED (Raymond Burr)
Thursday 1/29
THE HITCH-HIKER/CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS (William Talman)
Friday 1/30
STRANGERS ON A TRAIN/EXPERIMENT IN TERROR
Saturday 1/31
THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE/THE OX-BOW INCIDENT (Noir western bad guys)
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER/WHEN STRANGERS MARRY (Robert Mitchum)
Sunday 2/1
HE WALKED BY NIGHT/HOLLOW TRIUMPH
TOUCH OF EVIL/SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS
OK, that's 28 films, not 24. Bad men always change the rules after they've been established--something we all are too familiar with recently! It's likely more mainstream than what ChiBob and ChiO would expect, but they are more than welcome to construct their own variants--the more the merrier (or is that "the more, the grislier"?)
