--Too bad that Gord has misplaced his password...the "kiss of death" for otherwise stalwart Blackboard members. Fond memories of the olden days, Gord--all the best! OK, Gord, you got me intrigued enough to compile what is close to a definitive list of Lux Video Theater noir remakes. Pretty astonishing, even given what we know about the recycling going on elsewhere (Hour of Stars, Robert Montgomery, etc.) Perhaps we can eventually put together a full list of these TV noir remakes. This listing, which I don't recall seeing anywhere else previously, would certainly help fill the gap. I sorted this list by director and in inverse order of screening date (so latest first, earliest last). Some extremely interesting names attached to many of these episodes--and some that will probably have you scratching your head. --And could we not make a wild "TV noir" series from some combination of these remakes? I might just write that up as a follow-on... LUX VIDEO THEATRE Noir remakes DIRECTORS Fred Carney BETRAYED Earl Eby IMPACT (4/26/56) Brian Donley, Leif Erickson, Greta Granstedt, John Hoyt, Angela Greene THE UNFAITHFUL (1/12/56) Jan Sterling, Hugh Beaumont, Peter Adams THE WEB (12/1/55) Raymond Burr, Ray Danton, Arleen Whalen THE HUMAN JUNGLE (10/20/55) Dennis O'Keefe, Joan Vohs, Claude Akins, Russell Johnson LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE (6/9/55) Janet Blair, Dan O'Herlihy, Kathryn Givney SO DARK THE NIGHT (2/24/55) Joseph Schildkraut, Suzanne Dalbert Richard Goode THE HARD WAY (5/2/57) Ann Sheridan, Nancy Gates, Stephen Dunn, Tommy Farrell THE GLASS WEB (11/15/56) Cara Williams, George Nader, Dan O'Herlihy FLAMINGO ROAD (10/18/56) Joanne Dru, Raymond Burr, Philip Reed, Louis Jean Heydt IVY (1/19/56) Martha Hyer, Patric Knowles, Robin Hughes, Ellen Corby COVER-UP (12/29/55) William Bendix, Steve Brodie, Robert Vaughn SUSPICION (12/8/55) Kim Hunter, Dan O'Herlihy THE HUNTED (11/17/55) Richard Boone, Helen Westcott, Jerry Paris, Lyle Talbot THE LADY GAMBLES (10/27/55) Martha Hyer, Lyle Bettger, Anthony Caruso SHADOW OF A DOUBT (3/24/55) Frank Lovejoy, Barbara Rush, THE CHASE (12/30/54) Pat O'Brien, Ruth Roman, James Arness LADIES IN RETIREMENT (12/9/54) Elsa Lanchester, Claire Trevor, Edith Barrett, Sean McClory CAPTIVE CITY (11/18/54) Gig Young, Betsy Palmer, Murray Hamilton, Onslow Steves, Dwayne Hickman Buzz Kulik WITNESS TO MURDER (1/16/56) Audrey Totter, Onslow Stevens TWO DOLLAR BETTOR (10/13/55) King Donovan, Karen Sharpe, Gene Lockhart, Diane Jergens THE EYES OF FATHER TOMASINO [aka THE MIDNIGHT STORY] (9/22/55) Keefe Braselle, Joe DeSantis, Gloria Talbott THE SUSPECT (6/2/55) Robert Newton, Toni Gerry, John Hoyt MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS (3/31/55) Beverly Garland, Fay Bainter, Paul Richards SO EVIL MY LOVE (1/27/55) Louis Hayward, Marilyn Erskine SUNSET BOULEVARD (1/6/55) Miriam Hopkins, James Daly, Nancy Gates, John Wengraf DOUBLE INDEMNITY (12/16/54) Laraine Day, Frank Lovejoy. It's possible that the response to the then-rare 60-minute version of A PLACE IN THE SUN influenced the decision to expand to a hour-long format in the following year. And that's when the noir remakes really start to take off on the series... One last note: James P. Yarbrough is definitely not Jean Yarbrough...two different guys. |
