Anthony Mann’s Men in War is an impressive war film, very tight, set during one 24-hour period of the Korean War, and focused on one battle unit and a short march. Somewhat akin to A Day in the Sun in that respect. Robert Ryan is excellent as always, and Aldo Ray, wow, one of his best performances. Eddie Muller agrees with me about Ray, and has called him a completely natural, believable, and compelling actor. The movie highlights mental breakdown in war, not just by the inclusion of one illustrative character, but by five or six soldiers who are varyingly affected. The Fifties were the decade of the popularization of psychology.
