I think the phenomenon tends to be exaggerated further via HDTV, as opposed to 4K restorations shown in theaters. I don't know if anyone has tried to do a systematic "side-by-side" comparison, but I definitely think that Dan is on to something regarding what happens when these restorations are viewed on large-format HD home devices.
