The suddenly darkness-denying Post might defeat your viewing of this interesting essay by Tim Carmody, but the gist is that THE STRAIGHT STORY leaches out the nightmarish veneer of Lynch's foregrounded visual psychoexoticism and gets to the root of his nostalgia-laden love of the past and fixation on decay.
Those critics who can penetrate the gauzy trappings of deliberately overwrought visuals and zero in on the themes that underlie the Lynchian hocus-pocus are the ones who can see how "in the pocket" this seemingly anomalous film actually is with respect to the sadness-tinged celebratory yearning for a lost Eden that suffuses his oeuvre...
