There's something for everyone at 2025's festival as we screen double bills featuring the winsome and wicked women of film noir.
We'd expect a lot of what was screened in that long-ago festival, which featured the following titles:
Detour
Double Indemnity
Mildred Pierce
The Man I Love
Road House
The Postman Always Rings Twice
Tomorrow Is Another Day
Possessed
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
The Letter
Christmas Holiday
The Accused
The Reckless Moment
Leave Her to Heaven
Desert Fury
Caged
I Want To Live!
Witness to Murder
Sudden Fear
Crime of Passion
The Velvet Touch
The Locket
Decoy
Phantom Lady
Deadline at Dawn
The Unfaithful
Woman on the Run
Of course, there are many other films that fit into such a formulation, including some foreign titles that have been screened previously (and some that have not).
We'd expect some kind of representation for foreign noir, as it's clearly important for Eddie to think he's covered the waterfront there. Since it only happened in Chicago in '24, a pairing of POSTMAN with OSSESSIONE is certainly a way to create an "echo" of the about-to-be-mothballed 2024 theme....
Don't be surprised if a film like THEY WON'T BELIEVE ME makes the list, given that it features three women, two of which--Susan Hayward and Jane Greer--are known to be EM favorites.
And, of course, there's even room for other faves, like IN A LONELY PLACE, which does feature a strong role for Gloria Grahame and is another EM fave.
Perhaps this is the year where we get to see the reprise of the delirious double bill of LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN and DESERT FURY, which shook the Castro to the rafters with its LGBTQ innuendo (and Gene Tierney's self-destructive perversity!).
And there's even a good chance that we'll see the fifth screening of NIGHT EDITOR, just to ensure that folks don't forget just how nasty Janie Carter could be...
Feel free to add some titles to the list above--if everyone does so, we might at least list all the films that wind up in the NC 22 lineup.
