CAPTAIN CAREY would fare so much better and be better remembered had Paramount simply kept the source novel's original title (AFTER MIDNIGHT)--it's definitely a sleeper candidate for inclusion in a "1950" NOIR CITY that is rumored to be the theme for the 2025 calendar year.
Glenn Erickson provides a solid review of CAPTAIN CAREY at DVD Savant, written back in 2021 when the film received its first DVD release on Olive Films. The original disk had no commentary track, but the Kino release will feature Gary Gerani providing background for this intriguing obscurity. Gerani's documentary about film composer Billy Goldenberg, ROMANTIC MYSTICISM, is a thoughtful, nicely-put-together effort, so I suspect he'll have some interesting observations about CAPTAIN CAREY (which, among other things, introduced Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa", a track that certainly contains its own strong dose of "romantic mysticism...).
