Oh dear. What could have been an interesting hybrid of mobster noir and folksy small town film goes completely to pieces over an inexcusable screenplay. The improbabilities start in the opening minute - mob bosses don’t do their own hits - and never let up. One slightly interesting element is that the aw shucks prosecutor who is recalled thoroughly deserves it, so if he was intended to be a sympathetic figure, that doesn’t work.

(The judge by the way is also incompetent; the first murder trial clearly should have been declared a mistrial *. So much for Middle American justice!)

I have mentioned before my fascination with the twin brother actors John and William Hudson. John gets one of his rare high billings here, and although he isn’t asked to do anything special, guy knew how to wear a suit.

The craftsmanship (R.G. Springsteen directed) is pretty slipshod: For example, the name of the female lead character keeps morphing between “June” and “Joan”.
