No Man's Woman (1955) is a Republic mystery-noir. It highlights Marie Windsor until she's murdered, and then it becomes a mystery in which John Archer takes the lead role. Windsor's character invites her fate by mistreating everyone around her. She doesn't do anything illegal, but she breaks every rule of decency.
She takes full advantage of the divorce laws of the time to hold up her husband (John Archer). She attempts to take away the fiancé (Richard Crane) of her employee (Jill Jarmyn) and places him in a bad light. She gets an art critic (Patric Kowles) to violate his professional ethics and help her business, and then abandons him.
The way that Windsor's character operates, always in a completely selfish way, enjoying the hurt she's inflicting and ever ready with stinging remarks, makes it seem to decent folk that she almost deserves being murdered.
This is a competent b-film that's smoothly done by a capable cast.
Now available widescreen from Olive.
