Most MIA is the Italian double bill of WITHOUT PITY/BITTER RICE, which vanishes completely from the schedule at SIFF beginning Friday, February 16:
2/16 NEVER OPEN THAT DOOR (Arg)/STREET OF CHANCE (US)
2/17 mat ODD MAN OUT (UK)/VICTIMS OF SIN (Mexico)
eve UNION STATION (US)/CAIRO STATION (Egypt)
2/18 mat ACROSS THE BRIDGE (UK)/ZERO FOCUS (Japan)
eve ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS (France)/STRONGROOM (UK)
2/19 PLUNDER ROAD (US)/SYMPHONY FOR A MASSACRE (France)
2/20 BLACK TUESDAY (US)/LE TROU (France)
2/21 THE ASPHALT JUNGLE (US)/FOUR WAYS OUT (Italy)
2/22 LA BETE HUMAINE (France)/HUMAN DESIRE (US)
Also disappeared: the closing show at Oakland, MURDER BY CONTRACT/SMOG; Korea's AIMLESS BULLET; the UK's THEY MADE ME A CRIMINAL and Argentina's HARDLY A CRIMINAL.
FOUR WAYS OUT was screened at NC 15 in 2017, a fine film from Pietro Germi. Eddie once again decided not to pull the trigger and pair THE ASPHALT JUNGLE with RIFIFI, perhaps noting that if he'd done so, he would have created a four-in-a-row reprise of our "Franco-American noir" series from this past summer, with a total of five consecutive double features showcasing a French film.
The "borrow quotient" (MCP-->FNF) drops to five, but with only 18 films in the lineup, that "borrow percenage" is still robust (27%).
