When I commented about three weeks ago about the upcoming Noir City, I wondered about some of the strange pairings, and realized that it may be due to availability of titles. Last week's Ask Eddie seemed to offer some explanation, especially in the pairing of Odd Man Out with Victimas Del Pecado. Both superb films, but apparently there was another title that was to be paired with Odd Man Out that would have dealt with a fugitive on the run theme. That title became unavailable at the last minute. For some reason, Eddie decided not to divulge the title that he had in mind. It got me to thinking about what other foreign titles it might have been. Quickly I thought of two films made in Italy, The Walls of Malapaga (with Gabin) and Stranger on the Prowl (with Paul Muni and directed by Joseph Losey). Then the light bulb went off in my skull. A perfect companion to Odd Man Out - Gunman In the Streets(1950). Filmed in Paris, starring Dane Clark, but with an all French cast, with a very young Simone Signoret. A good quality DVD has been out for years and would have made for a fine fill in.
