So we will cut to the chase and not bother to explain the reasoning behind the choices before creating & displaying the hypothetical 75th anniversary tribute to NOIR 1949. Here it is:
Fri 1/19 THIEVES' HIGHWAY/HOUSE OF STRANGERS (Richard Conte)
Sat 1/20 matinee THE WOMAN ON PIER 13/WE WERE STRANGERS (strange bedfellows!)
evening TOO LATE FOR TEARS/THE BIG STEAL (destination: Mexico)
Sun 1/21 BORDER INCIDENT/THE CROOKED WAY (John Alton)
Mon 1/22 ABANDONED/RED LIGHT (Raymond Burr)
Tue 1/23 THE WINDOW/STRANGE BARGAIN
Wed 1/24 CHICAGO DEADLINE/SLATTERY's HURRICANE (Ladd & Lake, but not together...)
Thu 1/25 THE RECKLESS MOMENT/CAUGHT (Max Ophuls/James Mason)
Fri 1/26 WHITE HEAT/FLAXY MARTIN (Virginia Mayo)
Sat 1/27 matinee FLAMINGO ROAD/BEYOND THE FOREST (Joan & Bette)
evening CRISS CROSS/ROPE OF SAND (Burt Lancaster)
Sun 1/28 CHAMPION/THE SET-UP (boxing noir classics)
I rather doubt Eddie would toss together the two political extremes as we did, but empirical evidence suggests there's a 1-in-4 chance that if he reads about it here, he'll appropriate it! :-)
I had THE ACCUSED/A WOMAN's SECRET in an earlier version of this, but the former has been screened a lot, so I pulled it: but it could possibly take the place of the Tuesday night show (THE WINDOW/STRANGE BARGAIN).
TRAPPED and THE THREAT are films that the FNF boys are rather hot for, so they might make an appearance if a decision is made to add an extra double feature on the first Sunday.
Also missing are two Audrey Totter titles: TENSION and ALIAS NICK BEAL. If you tossed out the political strange bedfellows double feature, you could place that as the first Saturday matinee...as noted, there are an abundance of interesting choices for 1949.
I'll let the reader decide if he/she thinks this is a stronger program than the one that will actually play at the Grand Lake next month...
