By the way, I've never had any problem with the ending, nor with Lang's use of that technique in WITW. Those films work just fine as cautionary tales, dark fables where the protagonists get pitched into a nightmare scenario which just happens to be a fantasy spun out of their own sense of guilt. The exploration of that guilt is no less valid by their being spared in the end.
