I started keeping the list because I was seeing more and more mentions of these things, and then I dug to find further examples. But I haven’t updated it in several years, so there were undoubtedly more specimens in that gap. What all this suggests to me is that getting people to the theater is not easy, and that by-now familiar noir / hard-boiled tropes are a definite lure. However, there also seems to be something imaginatively lazy going on, a too-ready reliance on certain buttons.
