(1) Despite the ostensible 1924 setting, no real attempt is made to situate the action in period. If the movie had been made 20 years later, the period trappings might have been overdone, but here, they barely exist.
(2) I find Welles’ performance hammy, but I could live with that if if didn’t throw the latter half of the movie completely out of balance. The focus on Dillman and Stockwell is lost.
I would be interested to know others’ opinions on these points.
