Although no film version of The Great Gatsby is particularly good, Alan Ladd is the most convincing as the lead character. Sam Waterston offers the best Nick Carraway opposite Redford. Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, and Elizabeth Debicki all do well in their smaller roles in the Di Caprio version, but no actress has been able to do anything with Daisy Buchanan, a concept that works on the page but seems to be unplayable on screen.
