Sylvester eventually came back to America, but had no success continuing as a leading man; after his supporting role in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, he was pretty much relegated to television.
In among his British TV credits, however, is a startling discovery: amongst his seven appearances on the ITV PLAY OF THE WEEK from 1957-67, there is a 90-minute version of DOUBLE INDEMNITY from 1960 where Sylvester plays Walter Neff. His major co-stars make for a fascinatingly odd collision: Donald Pleasence as Barton Keyes, and Canadian actress Madeleine Sherwood as Phyllis Dietrichson. I can easily see Sylvester as Walter, but these other two strike me as really odd choices--odd enough, in fact, to spawn a perverse desire to see it. ITV's holdings seem to have been better preserved than many of the UK TV series, so perhaps one of these days...
